Dedicated to the memory of Tony Lett

This site is a tribute to Tony Lett, husband of Trish, stepfather to Richard, David and Nigel, and step grandfather of Jess, Tim, Jessica, Simon, Jonathan and Thomas.

Tony was born in Redcar, North Yorkshire on April 05, 1937. After service with the Royal Air Force between 1955 and 1967, he became a lecturer in automotive and mechanical engineering. For the next 30 years he devoted himself to teaching students in Swaziland, Kenya, Botswana and Abu Dhabi, and to athletics.

Tony energized the nascent athletics scenes in Swaziland and Botswana, occupying the role of National Coach in these countries as well as managing Commonwealth Games teams. He achieved his greatest success in Botswana, increasing the athletics program from just two events a year to a fully operational annual program of events that has contributed significantly to the country's current success on the global athletics stage.

Since his return to the UK, Tony has devoted 20 years to the Cornwall Athletics Club, during which time he was awarded England Athletics Coach of the Year (in 2008).

Tony was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in 2011. He continued to work in a local gym and coach athletes throughout his treatment and as the cancer spread. In May, 2014, at the age of 77, he took part in a trek with the aim of climbing Mount Toubkal, part of the Atlas mountains in Morocco and the highest mountain in north Africa at over 4000 metres. In doing this, Tony was also raising £1000 in funds for 'Beating Bowel Cancer' and for 'The Sunshine Appeal' at Treliske Hospital in Truro.

"I've had a good life. Around the world I have made a lot of friends, so what more could I ask for."
